A seed in Perumbakkam

He was born on 17 September 1937 at Perumbakkam in South Arcot district, to Mr. Muthusamy and Mrs. Mariammal. Overjoyed at a grandson, his paternal grandmother set aside a bag of silver coins for him. Years later, he would say, he used those very coins when he started his institutions in Perambalur.

His maternal grandparents, Mr. Vedanayagam and Mrs. Anbayammal, had five daughters. At a time when the village said a man with five daughters would end up a pauper, Vedanayagam educated all five and saw each into a government job. Having no son, they adopted this grandson as their heir, named him “Christopher”, and raised him in the Christian faith and in humanity. He always called them “Aiya” and “Amma”.

He lost his father as a small boy and grew up with his gentle mother and his younger sister Susila. Later in life he built a stately tomb at Perumbakkam so that the memory of his Aiya and Amma would endure.

“பாரதவிலாஸ்” — ஜாதி, மதம், மாநில எல்லைகளைக் கடந்த திருமணங்களை ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட வேதநாயகம் குடும்பம்; இன்று சர்வதேச எல்லைகளையும் கடந்த பன்னாட்டுக் குடும்பம்.“Bharathavilas”: the Vedanayagam family, which embraced marriages across caste, religion and state, and is today an international family.

1940s – 1950s

A childhood full of art

Growing up in a joint family with four aunts and their husbands filled his childhood with joy. He loved his cousins as his own brothers and sisters, and turned the house into a little theatre of stories, songs, dance and drama.

He played the bulbul tara, staged plays to songs on the gramophone, and by the 1950s was carrying a camera to capture and keep the family's memories. Wherever he was, there was laughter and energy.

சிங்கம் போல இருப்பான்!”“Our boy walks and dresses like Sivaji Ganesan, with that same dignity. He is like a lion!”— அவரது சித்திகள்— his aunts

At every family occasion, happy or sad, he was the bridge that brought everyone together. From childhood he thought differently, never following the crowd and always making his own path.

The lesson of one shirt

In primary school, a classmate was punished by the teacher for coming to class without a shirt. The scene shook young Christopher. The next day he asked his grandfather to buy a new shirt, and dressed his friend in it.

But the teacher punished the boy again, asking how a boy who had no shirt yesterday had one today. It left a deep wound in Christopher's heart. That wound did not turn into anger; it turned into compassion.

That day a boy gave his friend a shirt. In later years the same boy grew into the man who would wipe the tears of thousands of poor students.

Education and teaching

Teaching, a calling

He studied at Sharon Boarding School, Tiruvannamalai, and completed teacher training at Virudhampet, Vellore. He then taught in town after town:

While teaching at Panruti he enrolled children neglected by society in school, and through education gave them social respect and self-confidence. Teaching was never just a salaried job for him; it was God's work that could change a child's future. Along with lessons, he planted self-respect, confidence, discipline and the dream of moving forward.

His character was shaped by his teacher Mr. Rathnavel and headmaster Mr. Chelladurai. Among his closest friends were Mr. Janarthanan, Mr. Kanagaraj, Kalaimamani Thangaraj, Mr. David Chelliah and the poet Arulnathan Thangaraj.

A fearless voice in youth

As a young man he began speaking out against injustice, oppression and neglect. His principle: “Wherever wrong is done, questioning it is our social duty.”

In 1956, at 19, he began publishing stories and essays through “Sudaroli”. In 1959 he founded the V.O.C. Narpani Mandram, preparing young people for community service. He wrote not for ornament but to awaken, to make people think, and to bring change.

The young man who pulled up a chair

Dr. Joseph, uncle of his future wife Shantha, was the first in that family to become a Christian and a well-known doctor in Thandarampattu. When they met, Dr. Joseph began questioning the young man while leaving him standing. Christopher calmly pulled up a nearby chair, sat down, and answered every question with complete confidence.

“இந்த இளைஞரே நம் குடும்பத்திற்கு வர வேண்டும்.”“This young man must come into our family.”— அன்றே டாக்டர் ஜோசப் எடுத்த முடிவு— Dr. Joseph's decision, that same day

In 1968 he married Shantha, eldest daughter of Mr. Ranganathan and Mrs. Gowri of Nellikuppam Melpathi; her father ran a grocery shop and treated people with neem-leaf healing. The wedding at Ulundurpet was celebrated like a three-day festival. He was not only a husband to her but a true friend and partner for life.

In their home there was no religion, only humanity: food for the hungry, comfort for those in tears, hope for those in trouble.

Respected and well established in Nellikuppam, he left prosperous Cuddalore for Perambalur, then a backward district. Living somewhere comfortable was never his aim; transforming a place that lacked comfort was.

In 1983 he came to Perambalur with his dearest friend Janarthanan Pillai and started a teacher training institute in a rented house. Men students on one side, women on the other, and he in the middle as their guardian, eating the same food they ate. That was the first chapter of Perambalur's revolution in education.

Every one of his institutions in Perambalur today grew out of that rented house.

Faith

He preached love, not religion

He did not merely hear about Christ's love, compassion, humility and service; he lived them. He gave himself fully to the work of the church, yet never pressed anyone to change their religion.

He often recalled the Namakkal poet: people call God by many names, but behind every name stands the one Supreme. So his faith built bridges, never walls.

“கண்ட தன் சகோதரனிடத்தில் அன்புகூராத நீ, காணாத தேவனிடத்தில் எப்படி அன்புகூருவாய்?”“He that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?”— 1 யோவான் 4:20— 1 John 4:20
